Mathias Goebel and Anna Marie Dillenburg:

Mathias Goebel was born to Johann and Maria Goebel on the 24 February 1838 in Jucken. He married Anna-Marie Dillenburg on 18 April 1871 in Bastendorf, Luxembourg. Anna-Marie was the daughter of Peter and Lucia (Canive) Dillenburg. She was born the 21 November 1844 in Wallendorf. Mathias was a worker. Anna-Marie was a housewife.

They had four children:1) Mathias who died as an infant, 2) Gretchen (1873), 3) Pierre (1876) and 4) Marguerite (1883).

Mathias died in Bastendorf on the 30 November 1886 at the young age of 48 leaving Anna-Marie alone on a farm in Luxembourg with 3 children. She managed the farm with the help of neighbors and her son Pierre. Then her herd of six cows got a disease and died. So she sold her farm and moved to Alsase Loraine, a country where there was a lot of mining and fruit growing. She rented a little house, got a job for Pierre on a farm and tried to make a living for herself and her children. She took in boarders, did washing for people, anything to make a go.

One of the boarders that worked in a mine was nice to her and she married him. One day she decided to go see where Pierre was working. When she got there they were having their lunch. Pierre was not eating with them. He was in the kitchen when she went to see him. All he had to eat was a hard crust of bread and coffee to dunk it in. She took Pierre home with her.

When Pierre was home he did not like his new father. The father did not like Pierre either. The new husband was lazy and drank a lot and when he was drunk he was very mean to all of them.

Pierre needed a new job, so Anna went to one of the mine owners to see if he could get a job there for him. The mine owner liked Pierre and hired him. There he worked himself up over the years as manager of the mine.

Anna’s marriage did not work. She left him. In those days there were no divorces but he eventually drank himself to death and she was a widow again.

Mr. Litz, the mine owner where Pierre worked, took him under his wing. He had no children so he treated him like a son. He had bought a mine in Russia and sent Pierre to instruct the people there how to work in the mine. Pierre was in Russia three years when he sent for his mother and sister Marguerite, to come and keep house for him.

Russia was quite an upset country at this time. The Czar Nicolas was not liked by the people. They did not think he was a good ruler. They lived like kings at the palace while the poor people were starving. So they already were talking revolution. If a few people stopped to talk on the street the police would come on horse back and ride right into them and break them up. Anna and Marguerite were afraid to go any place unless Pierre was with them. He had signed a contract to stay another three years. As soon as his contract was finished they came back to Luxembourg.

Pierre was well paid for his work in Russia. He worked so much he never got a chance to spend his money, so he had saved quite a bit. When he got back, he bought a liquor store which came up for sale in Diekirch. They called this place Bamer Dale. He also got a job as agent for a big liquor factory to go from village to village taking orders for them. He left his mother and sister to run the bar.

Anna Marie died in Diekirch the 15 June 1910.

2)  Gretchen Goebel was born the 18 November 1873 in Bastendorf, Luxembourg to Mathias and Anna-Marie Goebel. She married Jean Baptiste Wolter on the 7 November 1896 in Grande Moyeuvre, France. He was born the 2 May 1872 in Imbringen, Luxembourg (another source said 1873).

They have four children; Anne (1897), Pierre (1899), Claire (1901) and Marguerite (1904). Jean-Baptiste was a worker in Kopstal. Gretchen was a housewife.

Jean-Baptiste died in Kopstal on the 1 July 1941. Gretchen died in Kopstal, Luxembourg the 17 October 1946.

3) Pierre Goebel was born to Mathias and Anna Marie Goebel on the 18 January 1876 in Bastendorf, Luxembourg. He married Catherine Lanners on the 29 November 1905 in Niederfeulen. Catherine was born the 19 September 1880 in Niederfeulen, Luxembourg. Pierre’s early life is told with his parents.  Pierre and Catherine owned a Café.

They had two children: Fernand (1906), and Berthe (1909).

Pierre died in Diekirch the 14 October 1932 and Catherine on the 20 April 1956 also in Diekirch.

4)  Margaret Goebel was born to Mathias and Anna Marie Goebel on the 18 February 1883 at Bastendorf, Diekirch, Luxembourg.  She married Jean Hirtz on the 28 July 1908 in Diekirch, Luxembourg.   John (Jean) Hirtz was born in the small village of Bigonville, Luxembourg on 7 June 1887. He was the eldest son (third born) of a family of twelve children born to Caroline (nee Schuller) and Pierre Henri Hirtz.

They had two daughters; Lucy Anne Marie (15 June 1909) and Renee Caroline (25 February 1916).

Marguerite died 18 June 1968.  John died 7 September 1969. Both are buried in the Beechy, Saskatchewan cemetery.
