On 1 June 1956, John was decorated for outstanding services to his country and made a Chevalier in the Grand Ducal Order of the Crown of Oak by the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg "for the valuable services to your country for the generous assistance given to the many immigrants from Luxembourg since you came to Canada". It was also mentioned that he had co-operated and assisted the government during the Second World War. This is the highest honor given to a civilian by the Luxembourg government.
