iv) Philippe Schuller was born to Francois and Marie Schuller in 1852. He may
have been married twice. If so, the first wife is unknown.
Philippe married Anna Marie Schleich sometime after 1878. Anna Maries
first husband was Johann Peter Spartz whom she married in 1875. They had two children;
Marguerite (1876) and Christian (1877). Mr. Spartz died in 1878. (Note: Marguerite
married Nicholas Scleich, had four children; Christ, Theodore, Mary and Elizabeth. Mary
married Eugene Bouchard and had three children; Germain, Yvonne and Marcelle. Marcelle had
a daughter Renee Vania who I corresponded with.) It may be that Christian Spartz came to
America with the Schuller girls, Marie and Marguerite around 1906 and then returned to
Luxembourg.
Philippe and Anna Marie had two daughters; Marie (1887) and Marguerite
(1889). Philippe died in 1891. The two girls had a rough existence at the mill
which was an important fixture around Boulaide. Through legal maneuvering, Mr.
Spartz heirs got the mill. Marie and Marguerite took their small settlement and
moved to the US after working briefly in Paris.
The mill was beside an old bridge (still used as a footbridge on the walking path) on
the road between Boulaide and Bigonville. The villagers petitioned in 1622 for the
bridge to be built. Now there is a high road. The mill is deep in the Sure
valley west of town. The depth of the valley was a factor in various deaths.
The mill was in operation already in 1754 by the Neumann family, according to Joseph
Neumann, vicar at Tennen, who was born at the mill. The mill pased to Nicolas Klein
1786 bought by Anton Felton. In 1824 Pierre Goerend or Goerens owned it. Jean
Schleich, Anna Maria's grandfather, owned the mill after that. Frederic Schleich was
her father and he lived there until 1889. In 1865 the family of Jean-Pierre Spartz,
formerly of the mill at Gemund, wre operating the mill. Anna Maria Schleich was also
living there with her father Frederic. Johann Peter Spartz was about 23 then, and
Anna was about 16. They didn't marry until 1875.
In 1878 Johann met with an accidental death, as he was crushed by his wagon on
returning to the mill on the steep road. By 1880 Phillipp Schuller of Schieren and
Anne Marie were the proprietors. They married in 1886 and Marie and Marguerite were
born in 1887 and 1889 respectively. Phillipp died in 1891 either from breathing
flour-dust or from the dampness of the mill-valley.
About this time Mr. Spartz' family was able to repossess the mill. After Anna
Maria died in 1905, the girls received a small settlement and went to Paris where they
worked as waitresses and eventually could afford to come to Chicago. Marie was
accompanied by a male relative, Mr. Baptiste Freres. Marguerite came with her cousin
Elise Nilles.
